J & J Tiles And More Corp., based in Georgetown, Tennessee, is more than just a flooring business—it’s a testament to the power of resilience, hard work, and building strong relationships. Founded by Jorge Ulloa eight years ago, the company specializes in flooring installation, including tile and hardwood, as well as remodeling and new construction projects within a 100-mile radius of Chattanooga.
Jorge’s journey is one of perseverance and faith. Born in Cuba, Jorge and his family escaped on a raft and were lost at sea for 12 days before being rescued in Mexico. After gaining asylum in the United States, he moved to Miami, where he met his wife and started a family. When both lost their jobs, Jorge’s cousin offered him an opportunity in Chattanooga’s tile industry. “I had no experience with tile,” Jorge recalls, “but with God’s help and a lot of trial and error, I learned everything I know today.”
Making money has never been an issue for Jorge, thanks to his work ethic honed from a young age in Cuba. The real challenge was learning to understand people. “In this business, building relationships is key,” he explains. “If they trust you, they’ll give you more and won’t count every penny. That’s when things really took off for me.”
Jorge’s approach of treating every contractor like a friend has led to deep personal and professional bonds. “We hang out, have dinner together, and our kids play together,” he says.
For Jorge, success isn’t measured by annual revenue but by consistency. “In construction, there are slow months, but we’ve never stopped working for more than three days in several years,” he shares. Starting with contracts through Lowe’s, J & J Tiles And More Corp. has grown to a $960,000-a-year operation through word-of-mouth referrals and customer loyalty.
While Jorge has no immediate plans to expand, he dreams of diversifying into real estate, flipping houses, and supporting his wife in opening a hairstyling studio. “For now, I want to stay where I am and grow organically,” he says.
Jorge advises new business owners to focus on relationships rather than profit. “Bigger isn’t always more profitable,” he explains. “Forget about the money and focus on building trust. That’s where true success comes from.”
